Jamzu update :: Known issue & next features

Known issue in Jamzu 1.0.1, Single Player mode:
- After the first game is over in a match, difficulty level is reset to “Easy” for following games.
Workaround:
- Always start each game from “New,” and gameplay will be on correct difficulty level.

Coming very soon! Jamzu 1.1

- Includes new gameplay speed for Single Player. “Fast” is current default speed. “Slow” will allow more time for seeing each move.

First Jamzu Press Review :: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

AppStruck.com ★★★★½

“Strategy-based fun board game that is quick to learn. Great app to play alone or with friends … Many of the options that Jamzu offers ought to be exemplary in all iPhone and iPod Touch board game apps. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, which makes me want to scream from the rooftops, “Bravo Jamzu!” … As with many successfully designed apps, the features are so seamless and logical that it takes a moment to stand back and notice that this is exactly as it ought to be.”

Jamzu Roadmap

Now that Jamzu is getting out and about in the world, some users are asking what we have planned for updates. Aside from the usual bug fix stuff (see below) we have lots planned for Jamzu on the iPhone.

Some features that will be showing up, sooner or later:

:::: Move Clocks. Choice of 30, 20, 15, 10 and maybe even 5 second (ouch!) move clock. Move clock will be optional.

:::: Doubling Cube. When playing for points, the doubling cube in Jamzu would work very much the same as in backgammon.

:::: Color Themes. Some choices in addition to the classic red/blue/black.

:::: Character Themes. Fun little animated character icons for your runners and jammers. Carrying the themes over to the lane control x marks, board, animation, and other areas.

:::: Stronger AI. The current AI is pretty tough, but we’ll always be trying to make it stronger. This may involve things like genetic algorithms to train the computer player, and/or neural nets, as well as various improvements to the current algorithm.

:::: Localized Versions. The ones we would like to start with first are likely German, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and French. More would follow later.

There are many other ways we will be updating Jamzu as we go forward, and Jamzu Pro will be offering some new twists soon. And of course, we would really love to hear your suggestions and feedback!

Jamzu News & Updates

We resubmitted Jamzu Free to the App Store. Should be a week or two. Cleaned up some issues in that version, and added links to Jamzu in the App Store. Also still working on the demo video for Jamzu.

We’ve submitted a bug fix update yesterday (Jamzu 1.0.1 mentioned in the post below) that cleans up two issues in the full version of Jamzu. Here’s the note on those issues:

Known issue in v1.0:
Selecting the “menu” button after the end of a Single Player game causes Jamzu to crash and exit. This does not affect actual game play, and does not occur in Two Player Wi-Fi mode. The “menu” button works normally during game play.

Also related to this bug: If you close Jamzu after a game and then reopen that game, it will show the position right before you won.

Workaround:
Select “start game” instead of “menu.” The next game will start normally, and then you can close and reopen that game normally whenever you want to. A game showing the end position repeatedly can simply be deleted.

A bug fix update for this issue has been submitted to Apple.

Jamzu Pro and Jamzu Pro Free are in the works. More info on these as we go forward. Stay tuned!

Jamzu 1.0.1 submitted to App Store

This is an update to fix the bug mentioned below, where Jamzu crashes when the “menu” button is selected after the end of the game. This bug does not affect actual game play or Two Player Wi-Fi mode.

First Bug Report :: Menu Crash at End of Game

Looks like a last minute bug was introduced in Jamzu. When you press “Menu” at the end of the game, you will get a crash. Jamzu exits to Home. “Menu” works fine during the game, however, and the bug does not affect the ability to play a complete game. Just exits rather ungracefully at the end when you press “Menu.”

We will have an update fix submitted to Apple immediately. This was a very last minute change that we didn’t submit to our testers. Oops, not smart!

This bug is in Single Player mode only. Wi-Fi “Menu” button at end of game works fine.

Thanks to cybergreg on the Cocos2d forums for reporting this one!

Use Hint to Learn Jamzu

Quick hint: the hint button is an excellent way to learn Jamzu! You can get some great ideas on how jammer moves work by watching what happens when you follow the hint move. Also watch what the computer does on its moves!
